From the Soda Journal, written on 5 July 06 by ed.
Theo Jansen’s remarkable Strandbeest are visiting London where they went for a walk in Trafalgar Square before settling down for an exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. His incredible wind-powered walking creations pre-date Sodaconstructor by several years and often bear an uncanny likeness to some Sodaconstructor models.
Despite sharing no connection the similarities would seem to suggest instances of independent parallel evolution between Strandbeests and Sodaconstructions. You see how the Sodaplay community reacted to his work in the Sodarace Forum
I was privileged to meet Theo while he was giving a talk and demonstrating “Animaris Percipiere”, which I videoed somewhat shakily on my phone. This creature is entirely powered by air; when outside its sails flap and compress air into drinking bottles from where the stored energy is distributed via ingenious hand-crafted pneumatic pumps and switches. I presented Theo with a Sodarace T-shirt as a modest gift to say thank you for his inspiration over the years.

You can now see Theo and his Strandbeests shot somewhat more professionally than on my phone in a recent car advertisement.
